Racism

Definition:
Racism is the discrimination and prejudice on the basis of the individual’s race or ethnicity. It involves a belief in the superiority of one race or ethnicity over another. It can manifest in many forms which include:

  • Individual Racism: Individual hate, attitudes, beliefs, and activities directed against certain races or ethnicities.
  • Institutional Racism: Practices and policies that cause systemic and societal racial inequality and discrimination, usually embedded in laws, policies, and institutions.
  • Internalized Racism: Negative beliefs and attitudes that have developed within the minds of the marginalized racial groups about their own identity as a function of conditioning by society.

Different Types of Racism:

  • Overt Racism: Open and noticeably hostile act of racial discrimination, prejudice, and violence.
  • Covert Racism: Insidious and indirectly discriminatory acts of racism, including microaggressions, stereotypes, and institutional bias.
  • Colorism: Prejudice and discrimination within the same racial group based on different shades of skin tone.

Effects of Racism:

  • Health inequalities: Due to racism, health disparities between marginalized races exist including chronic illnesses, infant mortality, and mental ill health.
  • Educational inequalities: Racism perpetuates barriers to quality education and employment hence determining the number of opportunities for marginalized races.
  • Economic inequalities: Racism perpetuates the existence of wealth gaps, discrimination in employment, and limited opportunities for work in people of color.
  • Social injustice: Racial discrimination leads to biased policing, mass incarceration, and racial profiling.
    *Psychological damage-Racism is likely to produce extreme instances of psychological distress among its victims, including anxiety, depression, and loss of self-esteem.

Combating Racism:

  • Education and Awareness: Raise awareness about racism, its history, and its harmful result.
  • Challenge Stereotypes and Biases: Actively counteract racist stereotypes and unconscious bias within our circles and those of others.
  • Support Anti-Racist Policies: Advocate for policies and legislation to address systemic racism and promote racial equity over the course of policy discussions.
  • Build Inclusive Communities: Develop the equitable scenarios where everyone is acknowledged, valued, and respected based on class, gender, race, or sexual orientation.
  • Speak Up Against Racism: Confront and report racist comments, actions, and practices when faced with them.
  • Support Organizations Fighting Racism: Aid, support, and join organizations that confront racism and advocate for racial justice in action.

Remember: Racism is a serious issue of our society, and it is a collective responsibility to eradicate it. A lot needs to be done in terms of educating self and others in challenging not only the biases but also working towards a more fair and just society so that the world we choose to live in is one that is shaped around dignity and respect for all.
